About Denur Crafts

WHO ARE WE - "Denur Crafts" is a small group of people, living in Kenya, who produce handicrafts, specifically jewelry. The group started in 1994 with just four women and has been growing since then, standing presently with a membership of 38 women.

The method and criteria of recruitment is very simple, one has to have skills to work by hand and need extra income. One must also have the possibility to work from their own home-environment. Women with children, who find themselves jobless are given first priority. However men can also be members of the group though it is basically a womens group.

OUR VISION -The vision of our business is to create employment and incomes for unemployed people in the country (especially mothers). It aims to give mothers the means to send their children to school and give them an acceptable standard of living.

WHAT DO WE DO - We are involved in jewelry-production. Each member creates their own designs with a bit of guidance from the proprieter. We use raw materials that are locally available and the crafts produced are a product of tradition. The jewelry is produced in Nairobi and the areas around it. We then market it abroad and at home. We mostly do wholesale.

HOW DO WE WORK - Denur Crafts operates as an informal grouping of women, comprising of business-owners who work together in improving the livelihood of the community through the making and sale of crafts. The proprietor plays the dual role of producer and export marketer. The other members focus on production for any of the orders the proprietor is able to generate. Orders received are passed on to these partners who, then, decide on what they will produce, at what price and by whom. Income generated by individual members depends entirely on the amount of work put in by that member. Children and elderly people are not involved in production.
